Decolonizing Imaginaries is the title of Alvaro's visual research in Visual Arts, as part of masters degree completed in 2023.
This project is a reappropriation exercise from brazilian paintings in order to transform them in a new visual statement questioning gender representations. Here, "A Moça com Livro" (The girl with the book) from the 19th century brazilian romantic painter Almeida Junior was the starting point in this investigation of creating new narratives from past references.
This exercise aims to put in practice some concepts of queer art, as defined by Isabel Alfonsi in hers "Pour une esthétique de l'émancipation" (For an aesthetic of emancipation), 2019. Occupying the public space with infiltrated posters is part of the research for alternative ways to exhibit visual messages that are not commercial neither a publicity of some kind. It's also empowering and emancipatory as artistic act in the terms developed by Alfonsi.
At this research stage, recycled paper from rejected projects were reused to avoid applying new materials as an environmental concern. This intervention was developed in three different formats (18 x 24 inches, 15 x 10 inches and 1/2 x 1 inches) to facilitate the research for available vertical surfaces to occupy. The samples displayed here happened in Montréal, in spring 2023.
